Our story
How it all began
Sometimes, something extraordinary begins with one small moment.
One evening, a tiny newborn raccoon was brought to Morelia Montes after becoming separated from its mother. She had never cared for a raccoon before, but with patience, compassion and determination she fed him his very first bottle and cared for him day and night. She named him Venancio.
As he grew, Venancio became a beloved little celebrity on Holbox.
But for Morelia, he became something even more important.
That night she knew she wanted to create a place where every animal could find love, protection and a second chance.
In 2009, that dream became Refugio Animal Holbox.
Today and tomorrow
Our mission
What began with the rescue of a single orphaned raccoon has grown into an organization dedicated to protecting dogs, cats and wildlife every day.
At Refugio Animal Holbox, we care for injured, sick, orphaned and abandoned animals of all kinds. From emergency care and veterinary treatment to finding loving forever homes, we support every animal with compassion, respect and dedication.
Our work goes far beyond the refuge itself. On the mainland, we organize spay and neuter campaigns, provide veterinary care in rural communities and promote responsible animal welfare through educational programs in local schools.
Our goal is not only to rescue animals, but to help create a future where fewer animals need rescuing.

Prepared for Every Storm
A safe haven
Holbox is a beautiful island, but during hurricane season the entire island may have to be evacuated within just a few hours.
To prepare for these emergencies, a second refuge was established about 20 kilometres inland in Solferino. It provides a safe haven for both people and animals whenever severe storms threaten Holbox.
Today, Solferino is much more than an emergency shelter. Around 60 dogs live here permanently, including many with special care or medical needs. Newly rescued animals also arrive here first, where they receive veterinary care, recover in peace and prepare for the next chapter of their lives.
Whenever a dog is adopted from Holbox, another dog from Solferino can move to the island refuge, allowing both locations to work together and help even more animals.
Here for Every Animal
Our Veterinary Clinic
Our veterinary clinic is the medical heart of the refuge.
Every day we care for our own rescued dogs, cats and wildlife—from emergency treatment and surgery to recovery and rehabilitation. Newly rescued animals first stay in our quarantine area before joining the other animals.
The clinic is also open to the local community on Holbox. Vaccinations, check-ups, medication and special veterinary diets are available to help ensure that owned animals on the island receive the care they deserve.
